How to find the PrintServer on another network (IP) segment

PrintServer and PC on the same network segment

  • Use PrintGuide™ to discover the PrintServer.
Ensure that DLC protocol is enabled in Network Preferences. DLC discovery protocol detects the PrintServer on the network even if it has no IP address.

PrintServer and PC on different network segments

In a network that uses a BOOTP or DHCP server, finding and connecting to the PrintServer is no problem even if your PC and the PrintServer are on different network segments. This is because these servers automatically assign a gateway address to the PrintServer as part of the IP address. In this case:

  • Use PrintGuide™ to discover the PrintServer.
Ensure that TCP/IP protocol is enabled in Network Preferences. This protocol (not DLC) is used to discover devices via the gateway(s) whose address(es) is/are currently configured in your PC (in NT's Control Panel, Network, for example). DLC protocol only discovers those PrintServers connected to the same network segment.
Note: You can try using different DLC adaptors if the PrintServer is not discovered the first time.

In a network with no BOOTP or DHCP server, the PrintServer is not automatically assigned an IP address (or gateway address). In this case:

  1. Get the gateway address the PrintServer needs to have in its configuration from your network administrator.
Note: Your PC and the PrintServer use the same gateway to communicate with each other, but the gateway's address is different for each segment. This means the gateway has one address in the PrintServer and another in your PC.
  2. Use a PC connected to the same segment as the PrintServer to configure the gateway address in the PrintServer.
  3. Use PrintGuide6™ to discover the PrintServer.
Ensure that TCP/IP protocol is enabled in Network Preferences, for reasons explained earlier on this page.
