How to reserve PrintServer's IP address on DHCP server

Note: This ensures that the PrintServer is assigned the same IP address at every power on.

  1. Install the DHCP Service on a Windows NT Server
  2. Create a scope, or range of TCP/IP addresses
  3. Reserve the PrintServer's IP address on the DHCP Server
  4. Display the PrintServer's Advanced Configuration web page
  5. Select Automatic as the IP Lookup Method and select DHCP protocol
  6. Click Save & Continue
  7. Restart the PrintServer

The PrintServer is permanently assigned an IP address in the DHCP Server. If no IP address is reserved, the DHCP Server assigns an available address to the PrintServer every time power is switched on.

Install the DHCP service on a Windows NT server

  1. Open the Control Panel, double-click the Network icon, and click Services.
  2. Click Add and select Microsoft DHCP server and then click OK.
  3. Specify the path to the Windows NT Server installation files and click OK. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  4. Restart the Server.
    Once the system has restarted, you will find a new icon called DHCP Manager in the Administrative Tools group.

Create a scope

In order for the DHCP Server to give out IP addresses it must know the range of IP addresses it can give out.

  1. Start the DHCP Manager.
  2. On the Server menu, click Add.
  3. Type the DHCP Server name or IP address, and click OK.
  4. On the Scope menu, click Create.
  5. To define the available range of IP addresses for the scope, type the start and end IP addresses for the range in the Start Address and End Address boxes.
  6. Click Yes to activate the scope.

Reserve the PrintServer's IP address

  1. Start the DHCP Manager.
  2. On the Scope menu, click Add Reservation.
  3. Type the IP address, Unique Identifier (MAC address), Client Name (NetBIOS Name) and a Client Comment (optional text that you enter to describe the PrintServer.
  4. Click Add to add the reservation to the DHCP database.
  5. Click Close when you are finished.
