Quick Guide
Pre-installation task
- Record the universal MAC address (00036E.....) from the white label on the back of the PrintServer.
- At power on the PrintServer will try to obtain a valid IP address from a DHCP or BOOTP Server in your network. If you intend to use any of these two IP configuration methods, then you must ensure that they are set up correctly.
Note: When you set up your DHCP Server, we recommend that you predefine (reserve) what IP address the PrintServer will get.
Network installation
- Make sure no power cord is connected to the PrintServer and that no cable is connected to the PARALLEL port. The PARALLEL port is intended for service situations only and not for printing.
- Connect network cable to the UTP or STP port on the rear panel of the PrintServer.
- Check that the red CONFIG switch on the rear panel of the PrintServer is set to the correct Token Ring Speed (4 or 16). The white marker on the switch indicates the current setting.
Possible positions of the CONFIG switch:
- 4 - Token Ring speed 4 Mbps.
- 16 - Token Ring speed 16 Mbps.
- BOOT - For service personnel only.
- * - For service personnel only.
- Connect power supply, turning on the PrintServer. The green LEDs on the PrintServer front will blink during the power on and self-test cycle.
- The PrintServer's LAN LED should light if the network installation is correct. You can also verify this with the ping command.
Note: If the PrintServer did not get a valid IP address from a DHCP or BOOTP Server you can use the arp command to manually assign the PrintServer a valid IP address.
PrintServer configuration
Before you can print you must configure at least one logical printer. Each logical printer is configured to accept data from an input port, transform the host print data, and direct it to one of three network printers using a TCP/IP Network Port Driver or an LPR Port Driver.
To configure the first logical printer using a web browser follow these steps:
- Enter the IP address in the Browser's location or address field. For example 192.135.7.29.
- Click Login to PrintServer to configure the PrintServer.
- Click Logical Printers.
- Select a Logical Printer that has Printer 1 as Output. Click Configure.
- Click the Printer tab. Select a Driver and click Submit.
- Click the Port tab. Enter the port driver settings, including the TCP/IP address of your network printer.
Click Submit.
The PrintServer provides on-line help through the web browser. As an alternative you can use PrintGuide to configure the PrintServer.
Verify PrintServer installation
- Make sure both PrintServer and network printer is powered on.
- Generate a settings printout on Printer 1 by pressing the TEST key once on the PrintServer's rear panel. The test page(s) shows the internal settings of the PrintServer.
