How to configure a Windows NT 4 network server for printing
This describes how to configure network printing on a Windows NT 4 network server.
Note: You need to login to the server as administrator for this procedure.
To enable printing on a network printer, a queue must be set up on the server to spool the print jobs. When the queue is defined, you must share the printer to allow others on the network to connect to and use the printer. TCP/IP lpd/lpr printing is one method of printing under Windows NT:
Setting up printing with lpd/lpr
- Install TCP/IP Network Printing Support
- Press Start, Settings, Printers. Double-click Add Printer and select My Computer
- Click Add port, then choose LPR port and click New port.
- In the field Name or address of server providing lpd: specify the IP address of the PrintServer.
- In the field Name of printer or print queue on that server, enter the PrintServer's remote printer queue name. The remote printer queue is the internal queue on the PrintServer, it can be found on the printed Technical Status page or on the PrintServer's Status web page. The default remote queue name for the PrintServer is LPDPRT1.
- Press OK, and click Close. The lpr port is now added to your system and available as a port. Press Next.
- Select printer make and model, and press Next. If your printer is not listed, consult your printer documentation for a compatible printer.
- Choose a name for your printer.
Note: This is not the sharename, it is a name describing the printer locally on the server.
- Click the Shared option box, and enter a Share Name. This is the network name that will be displayed on the network when connecting to the printer from other clients. You can also install printer drivers for other operating systems. So when a client connects to the shared printer, that printer driver will automatically be downloaded from the server to the client. As a default, NT installs only the NT driver. To install drivers to other operating systems, click the appropriate operating system and install the drivers, making sure you have the drivers available.
- Choose Yes to print a test page and press Finish to complete the installation.
To install TCP/IP Network Printing Support
Note: We advise you to install the latest service pack when adding a service to Windows NT.
- Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, double-click the Network icon and click Services
- Click Add, and in the Select Network Service dialog, select Microsoft TCP/IP Printing, and click OK
- When prompted, type the path to the Windows distribution and click OK
- Restart your computer.
