How to configure a Novell NetWare server for printing
Novell network printing uses the IPX/SPX protocol. The way in which printing is done is determined by your choice of printing method and your NetWare version.
- Configure the Novell server itself using one of the Novell supplied utilities; NetWare Administrator (part of NetWare 4 and 5) or NetWare PCONSOLE (part of NetWare 3 and 4). A note on Novell Netware concepts and terms, as they relate to the different Netware versions, is given below.
- Follow the Guided Configuration in the PrintServer's web pages, selecting IPX/SPX protocol.
To do this, click Home, then
then IPX/SPX.
Note: There are two possible printing methods the PrintServer can use
in a Novell NetWare environment:
- Remote printer method
The PrintServer is controlled by a NetWare print server and functions in a way similar to a workstation running either: NetWare 4 or 5 NPRINTER or NetWare 3 RPRINTER.
- Queue server method
The PrintServer makes use of its embedded NetWare print server. The embedded print server (EPS) emulates a standard NetWare PSERVER.NLM.
You are asked to select between these in the Guided Configuration.
Novell NetWare concepts and terms
With NetWare 4, Novell introduced NetWare Directory Services (NDS), but at the same time Novell maintained an emulation of the NetWare 3 Bindery mode. The PrintServer supports both NetWare Directory Services (NDS) and Bindery mode. We assume use of NetWare Directory Services (NDS) if you run NetWare 4 or 5. In connection with NetWare 4, Novell also introduced the NPRINTER instead of the RPRINTER known in NetWare 3.
