How to configure a Windows 2000/2003 network server for Standard TCP/IP Printing
This describes how to configure network printing on a Windows 2000/2003 network server.
Note: You need to login to the server as administrator for this procedure.
To enable printing on a network printer, a queue must be set up on the server to spool the print jobs. When the queue is defined, you must share the printer to allow others on the network to connect to and use the printer. Standard TCP/IP printing is one method of printing under Windows 2000/2003:
Setting up printing with Standard TCP/IP port
- Click Start, Settings, Printers. Double-click Add Printer and select Next
- Select Local printer, and clear the checkbox Automatically detect my printer and then click Next.
- Click Create a new port, then select Standard TCP/IP Port in the drop down list, and click Next.
- In the field Printer Name or IP Address: specify the IP address of the PrintServer.
- In the field Name of port, a port name can be specified if needed. Status web page.
- Click OK, and click Close. The Standard TCP/IP port is now added to your system and available as a port. Click Next.
- Select printer manufacturer and model, and click Next. If your printer is not listed, consult your printer documentation for a compatible printer.
- Choose a name for your printer and click Next.
Note: This is not the sharename, it is a name describing the printer locally on the server.
- Click the Share as option box, and enter a Share Name. This is the network name that will be displayed on the network when connecting to the printer from other clients. You can also install printer drivers for other operating systems. So when a client connects to the shared printer, that printer driver will automatically be downloaded from the server to the client. As a default, 2000/2003 installs only the 2000/2003 driver. To install drivers to other operating systems, click the appropriate operating system and install the drivers, making sure you have the drivers available.
- You have a possibility to put in location and comment.
- Choose Yes to print a test page and click Next
- Click Finish to complete the installation.
