Secure printing of insurance papers

A British insurance company added their System i output to their managed print services and secure print solution.

The Challenge

One of MPI Tech’s blue-chip clients in the insurance sector had been using Blue Server to manage their IPDS printing since 2004. The client entered into managed print services at the start of 2008 and their Service Provider was asked to include software to perform secure print & print cost accounting for both Windows and iSeries printing.

When the client and the MPS provider found that the print tracking application was unable to capture the iSeries printing they turned to MPI Tech for the solution.

The Solution

New features from Blue Server enables Print Tracking and Cost Recovery Application to capture printing from iSeries

Print tracking/accounting works on a “per user” basis and sits on a server receiving PCL data from the network as well as from Blue Server. Blue Server receives AFP/IPDS data coming from the iSeries, converts it to PCL and sends the spool files to the print tracking/accounting queues. As is usually the case the iSeries user name and network user names are not the same.

MPI Tech therefore developed a new feature which enables Blue Server to capture the iSeries user name and swap it from a table supplied by the customer. Blue Server then sends the user name in an appropriate format to the Print Tracking/Accounting using special PJL commands, so that the application is able to recognise the user.
